a5c7b9f00b The American Lucy is studying in Taiwan and is dating Richard that she met at a nightclub. When Richard has a briefcase to deliver to the mysterious Korean Mr. Jang, he tricks Lucy and cuffs her to the briefcase. Lucy has no other option but to meet Mr. Jang, who is a dangerous drug lord that kills Richard. Lucy discovers that the briefcase contains the synthetic drug CPH4 and she is forced to work to Mr. Jangdrug mule with three other men and transport the drug to Europe hidden in their abdomens. However one of her captors kicks her in the abdomen and releases the CPH4 in her body. Soon Lucy enhances her brain capacity and develops her physical and mental capabilities. She uses her abilities to kill the criminals and flees. However her power does not stop increasing and is destroying Lucy that needs to use more CPH4 to stabilize her body. She contacts Professor Norman, who is an authority in brain capacity, and the scientist becomes her hope to save her. But Mr. Jang wants to retrieve his drug and is hunting Lucy down.
It was supposed to be a simple job. All Lucy had to do was deliver a mysterious briefcase to Mr. Jang. But immediately Lucy is caught up in a nightmarish deal where she is captured and turned into a drug mule for a new and powerful synthetic drug. When the bag she is carrying inside of her stomach leaks, Lucy's body undergoes unimaginable changes that begins to unlock her mind's full potential. With her new-found powers, Lucy turns into a merciless warrior intent on getting back at her captors. She receives invaluable help from Professor Norman, the leading authority on the human mind, and French police captain Pierre Del Rio.
Back in late 80's and early 90's Luc Besson burst on to the world cinema sceneone of the few directors who were able to combine the depth of typical intellectual french cinema and action sequences in almost poetic way. His early movies "The Big Blue", "Nikita" and "Léon: The Professional" to just a name a few, were great testament to his unique way of story tellingwelldirecting style. The characters he creates, being also a writer of the scripts for most of his movies are usually loners who care about themselves until something or someone changes their life irreversibly. <br/><br/>Smart Hollywood producer once said that directors are like pitchforks for a while they are in tune with what is hip and top quality, but after while they loose their tune and they never come back to the time of an excellence from their youth. Well that is one man's opinion, because everything is cyclical so something that was in fashion many decades ago eventually will comeback in to fashion again. We often use the technology that helps us to achieve the final product that is theoretically improved. In reality we recycle old ideas and it is very hard to not give them our own individual twist. Mostly for directors it is almost impossible to top the success of the movie that brought them fame and recondition. You aways will be judged more harshly now then before, because more is expected of you. But to be a great director you need a life experience and that comes with time. <br/><br/>"LUCY" is one of those movies that you will either like it or hate it depending on if you like Besson's narrative style. <br/><br/>"A woman (titled LUCY played by excellent Scarlett Johansson) is accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic."<br/><br/>In this straight forward premise Besson is hiding deeper meaning to what otherwise would have been predictable and unoriginal story. There is a lot of intellectual information delivered in a coded way by using so called cut aways and fast montage that illustrates the parallel between the story of the main character and the evolution of life on our planetwe know it. This at first might be quite confusing for the viewer but eventually you understand subconsciously what Besson is trying to tell us. By choosing symbolically the name LUCY he points us in the direction of understanding that Scarlett Johansson's character is a first human being to ACCESS 100 % of the brain capability paralleled by a sorry of the first 3.2-million-year-old ape "Lucy" who was the first Australopithecus afarensis skeleton discovered by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray on the November 24, 1974 on the coast of South Africa. <br/><br/>Those of you who expect an all out action film might leave the cinema disappointed. "LUCY" is more of an intellectual film discussedan action film, if that makes sense. Scarlett Johansson is excellent specially in the first act of the filma "stupid blond" that gets mixed up with the wrong kind of people that take advantage of her innocence. She is super emotional andan actor does some great technical work with tears coming of one or the other eye which is not easy. The slow transition from victim to the empowered super human being that eventually can control the reality of time and space is done gradually and is symbolically plastered over the screen with the big number of the percentage of how far of the transition she is in. Morgan Freemanusual, brought his depth and amazing voice to play Professor Norman that Scarlett Johansson's character comes in contact with. The third act might not begoodthe first two which for a big Hollywood movie might be a bit of a letdown but the intellectual message passed on to us is in itself is full of depth on the intellectual level. Spoiler Alert! Don't read on if you don't want to have any idea of what happens… if you don't care I'll give you my interpretation of this film. Lucy's friend Richard tells her to deliver a briefcase to a drug lord. The briefcase has a new drug which seems to make people smarter. Lucy and 3 others are forced to carry the drug in their bellies to be later removed when they reach Europe. Lucy is beat up and kicked in the tummy by one of her captors which ruptures the bag and she overdoses on this new drug via her tummy. Instead of dying she is now much smarter but only has a short time to live. As the hours go by during the day her brain unlocks regions that were not accessible before, when she reaches 100% no one knows what will happen, but she says she will no longer be alivewe know it. For some reason she allows the drug lord to live while she kills a lot of his crew and finds out where the other 3 people were delivering the drugs to because she needs the rest of the new drug. She gets the rest of the drug pouches and is now being tracked down by the drug lord. She reaches 100% and goes back in time, you see some indians, dinosaurs, stuff in space, then she goes back to the present, the drug lord shoots her while she is then turning herself into the ultimate gaming computer, he misses, he's shot dead by a french cop. She then turns herself into a new type of organic PC which then ejects a 2GB USB stick which is inconveniently long and holds every answer there is to every question that's ever been asked. So you've been given billions of years of life, now you know what to do with it. I'm not kidding, that's what the movie shows. Here's my version: she never made it out of the cell where they were holding her captive before her flight. Once the captor kicked her in the stomach, the bag broke and she OD'd. The rest of the movie was her drug trip, but in real life she was laying there, looking like a crack head wanting another hit, moving her handsif the world was an IPhone, and then she died. The point of the movie: Kids, don't do drugs! I think Transcendence's version of how someone becomes so intelligent that they can control matter was better than this movie. It seems like they really didn't know what to do at the end. Since we can only use 10% of our brains how could we ever know or imagine what could be done with 100%? So they decided to add dinosaurs and space stuff for the oooh's and ahhh's.
Besson’s script may let her (and Freeman) down in the third act, but the 89 minute long Lucy is so brisk it’ll give you whiplash. Even marginal thrillers benefit from a director and star who have a sense of urgency and arehellbentthis on not overstaying their welcome.
